Nintendo's Codename: NX Project

What should be said about Nintendo and the NX.

I think that Nintendo is feeling a bit of pressure based on the lack of 3rd party support, and overall lack of success of the Wii U. The Wii U had a head start on the other two consoles of this generation. Which should have given them a bit of a head start with install base and developer support. That has not been the case as of... the entire lifespan of the Wii U, At least on the 3rd party developer support. Madden 15 did not even come out for the Wii U, and Madden comes out every year for almost every system. Without the support from a good core of 3rd party developers, a game system's library will pale in comparison to those with support. The Wii U's is spotty compared to the PS4, and Xbox One. Nintendo can't keep the Wii U alive with just first party exclusives, although Nintendo does consistently make very good games.

The fact that the Wii U has been out for 3 years, and Nintendo has already hinted at the next full scale system is troubling to me. The Gamecube had a lifespan of about 5 years, from 2001 up until the Wii came out in 2006. While the Wii U came out 6 years after the Wii. I would say that Nintendo is keeping with their schedule, but it is feeling a bit early this time around.

The increasing support of mobile gaming, along with the DeNA partnership bring up questions about what their focus will be in the upcoming years. The majority of Nintendo's E3 press conference/Nintendo Direct, were games for the 3ds and Star Fox Wii U. One game, Metroid Prime: Federation Force already has 20 thousand signatures on a petition to get it cancelled.

With the NX and DeNA mobile gaming partnership, Nintendo seems to be aiming towards increased 3rd party support and market foothold. Nintendo mobile games actually sound fun, and much more affordable. I can justify buying a mobile Mario game than buying an entire system that may not have much gas in the tank. I think that Nintendo knows that could be true for many people.

Nintendo might be taking a step forward towards recovering lost ground. Or they could alienate those that have been faithful to the Wii U. Either way, Nintendo is gearing up for a big move that could define the company for years to come.
